This Savory Breakfast Oatmeal is a quick and easy alternative to a typical sweet oatmeal breakfast
I’ve been eating my morning oatmeal savory forever it seems! My brother-in-law turned me on to it back in the day and I’ve never gone back to sweet oatmeal since then.
Really, rolled oats are just another grain that can be eaten sweet or savory. It’s just become more common to eat the sweet version.
Well, move over sweet oatmeal because savory has come to town!
This is a very simple breakfast and also comforting and quite hearty – not necessarily creamy. I usually eat mine with a side of toast but you might find it filling enough just by itself. The toppings really help to make this a very tasty bowl of goodness to start your day.
What you’ll need
- Rolled Oats (not quick oats)
- Salt
- Olive oil, butter or ghee
- Tamari or soy sauce
- Nutritional Yeast
- Fresh chopped cherry tomatoes
- 1/4 of a ripe avocado
- Feta cheese
How I make Savory Breakfast Oatmeal
- Bring a pot of water with a little added salt to a boil.
- Pour in the rolled oats and stir, then bring it back to a boil.
- Watch it carefully and stir – you may need to turn your burner down a bit, to medium low, so it doesn’t overflow.
- Let the oats simmer, (gently rolling), and stir occasionally.
- It should cook for about 6 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and put on the pot lid and let it sit covered for about 1 – 2 minutes.
- Stir and add to your bowl.
- Add olive oil, butter or ghee and mix in.
- Stir in tamari or soy sauce and the nutritional yeast.
- Taste to check if you want to add more seasonings.
- Top your bowl with fresh chopped cherry tomatoes, 1/4 of a ripe avocado cut in cubes and crumbled feta cheese.
- Optional topping: chopped green onions.
It doesn’t get too much easier than this to have a quick, easy and nutritious breakfast that just about anyone can make. It only takes a few simple ingredients and about 15 minutes of your time!
And for a vegan version you could substitute vegan cheese or tofu in your toppings – just be creative.
